Runner’s/Fitness Junkies Christmas Wish List

So let’s just say that you have NO idea what to buy for that specific person who adores fitness like it’s noone’s business! What if the person you are dating is a runner, and you like lifting things up and putting them down? You’re gonna wanna check out this Wish List 🙂

wish+list

Race Entries – if you are looking to buy a runner a gift, or even someone who has shown the slightest interest in participating in a run.. this would be a pretty legit gift! Maybe pair it with another item on the list and you’re good to go – that person is going to love you forever! There are a ton of different runs and obstacle courses of different length and difficulty.  I would suggest a Graffiti Run, Foam Run, Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, and Electric Run, etc.  Like I said there are plenty of events to choose from – Google is your best friend!

Headphones – anyone can always use a new pair of headphones, even if they just bought a pair.. no one complains about having a backup, because let’s just face it – we all tend to lose headphones… at least I know I lose headphones alot! Here are the ones that I am currently rocking, I love them because they don’t fall out when I run or workout! Yurbuds, for the win – http://yurbuds.com/products/behind-the-ear/focus-pro/

Itunes Giftcard – I know gift cards are frowned upon, but whether you are a gym fanatic, runner, Zumba-er, Crossfit-er, swimmer, etc.. we all listen to music every now and again.  Honestly, music is what tends to keep me going when I’m exhausted from a major gym workout, and still need to knock out a few miles.  Any increment will do, but keep in mind that some songs are about $1.29!

Shoes – This is more for the couples or friendships that have stood the test of time and know shoe sizes and brands that your Christmas gift receiver enjoys wearing.  Not to mention, shoes are difficult to purchase because everyone has a different arch. If you know all of the above for whoever you are buying for, then get on out there and pick them up some new shoes! If you don’t know those things, but would still like to purchase new shoes for someone – I would go with Brooks for running and Reebok for weightlifting. Vibrams have also been an “in” kind of thing for a while, and they would be a fun kind of minimalist shoe to have in the closet! Brooks has a nifty tool called the Brooks Advisor which helps you pick out a pair of shoes that best fits your lifestyle – http://www.brooksrunning.com/on/demandware.static/Sites-BrooksRunning-Site/Sites-BrooksRunning-Library/default/brooks_shoe_advisor/Default.htm.  Here is the Reebok weightlifting line that I recommend – http://shop.reebok.com/us/crossfit/_/N-1z12xfw?cm_mmc=RbkSEM_bing_ecom-_-CrossFit+-+TSF-_-Branded+CrossFit-_-Reebok&cm_mmca1=US&cm_mmca2=e.

New Water Bottle/Hydration Belt – Hydration is totally important for any type of workout.  Just like headphones, I lose water bottles left and right… so you really can’t have too many water bottles or hydration belts.  If you want to add a little something along with this gift, you can always pair it with electrolyte tablets.  Nuun Tablets are my first choice.  Check out FuelBelt – http://www.fuelbelt.com/

Starbucks Gift Card – We all try to live a healthy lifestyle, but if you were to tell me that you never ever eeeever go to Starbucks… I’d want your autograph! We all have cheat days, and what better way than to cheat with a frapp or hot drink and a pastry from Starbucks.

Running Jacket with Pockets – This is a staple item for any runner.  Even if you have seen your runner with a couple of running jackets, another one is not going to hurt that person. Plus, what happens when we forget to wash the jackets that we already own? Well… gross or not – we end up wearing the jacket over and over again.  Please add to our wardrobe collection. 🙂

Gym Bag – I own two gym bags which I received within a month of each other and they both work out great for different purposes and trips.  Gym bags that have a shoe compartment is what you are looking for – it keeps the stink and nastiness of a running or workout shoe confined to one area and in doing so… your clothes won’t stink up! Score!

GPS Running Watch – This is a pricier item, which can probably stand alone as a Christmas gift.  I know there are a ton of different GPS watches available, but I have provided a link to the Garmin 620 which has outstanding reviews! If you aren’t purchasing a watch for a runner, why not check out the FitBit or Nike Fuel.  These two are great for the fitness junkie who spends their time sweating it up at the local Box or community gym.  http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/04/garmin-forerunner-610-in-depth-review.html

Compression Sleeves – Most definitely are geared towards runners.  I don’t personally wear sleeves, but I do hear that they work wonders for for legs and calves during a run.  If you are going to purchase sleeves for anyone, I would definitely purchase a black pair because black is extremely universal.  No zebra prints, unless the person you are buying for is in love with zebras!

Two Month Entry to a Fitness Bootcamp – What better way to start the New Year then to start off living a healthy lifestyle. I highly suggest this gift, because you can buy one for someone else and also buy it for you.  It makes for a great date, I would think! I’ve never turned it into a date before, but I would imagine that this would be a great experience for two people.  It would also make for a perfect hangout between gym buddies or girlfriends! After you complete your bootcamp, why not grab a drink from Starbucks with that gift card?

I hope this list helped someone out there. 🙂 Happy Shopping and Merry Almost Christmas!

Operation Comfort for Wounded Warriors 5k, Bike Ride, BBQ, Car Show

Hey y’all! I ran the Honor Run and Ride – Operation Comfort for Wounded Warriors 5k on December 1, and as you can tell I am a little behind on typing up a review, but better late than never right? This run was put on by Purnell Racing and proceeds raised are being used to send a Veteran back to Vietnam to enjoy the country without being shot at.  If anything warms my heart, it is people, organizations, and events that support our American troops and stand behind them! I have a good amount of military influence in my family, and plenty of friends that are near and dear to my heart which serve in our military. They all play a vital role in my being so patriotic. I just could not pass up this opportunity!

Like I said, the event was at Ladybird Johnson Park on December 1st which is a great way to kick off December! It was at 10 AM, and I arrived at 9:30 which again was plenty of time for me to get registered and do a few leg warm ups.

IMG_7104

I looked around and absolutely loved what I saw..there were runners, walkers and hand cyclists who all joined together for one wonderful cause.

IMG_7091IMG_7088

IMG_7094

Check her out – she even came ready to skate her way through the course!

IMG_7100

The run started and we were off, I ended up passing a few people and for the majority of the run, I found myself right behind or right in front of these two runners.  Positive peer pressure!

IMG_7098

This guy was not far behind, he was pretty much next to me the whole time which I thought was extremely neat! I felt honored. 🙂 Watching him handcycle really put things into perspective for me – he completed the exact same event that I registered for, and he was all smiles and had such a great demeanor! I really couldn’t complain that I had a slight headache.

IMG_7109

I finished in about 28 minutes, I believe! Or was it 27 and some change.  Either way, I finished sub 30!

I felt the course was beautiful.  It was my first time running this particular park and I have to say I enjoyed every bit of the course! It was a paved and winding course throughout the park with foliage on both sides of the paved route.  At one point the course led us out of the park, across an access road, under a highway bridge and looped back around.  Was I worried about safety? Not one bit because there were police blocking/directing traffic as we ran across the access road and back again.  The check-in process was quick and simple AND in addition to that.. the greatest thing about this race was that so many different people, with different stories, lifestyles, hobbies.. we were all there to support one extremely honorable cause.  I LOVED seeing people fuse together in the way that we did that one day in honor of those who have fused together overseas and stateside for us every day.  Thank YOU for serving!

The 5k came full force with a Bike Ride, BBQ and Car Show.  So after we completed the run, we checked out the other events.

I am SUPER happy that I participated in this run! It was fun, humbling and such an incredible experience! I can’t wait for the next Operation Comfort Run. As every day people, sometimes we feel like we can’t do much for our military men and women, past and present, but there are ways of touching lives – even if you think it’s miniscule, to someone it may be the world!

Thank you all for reading and I hope y’all are doing fantastic! Down here in Texas, we are experiencing coooold weather, at least we aren’t used to 30 and 40 degree weather.  Stay warm wherever you are, and keep on smiling!

P.S.  If you would like to check out Operation Comfort – here is their website operationcomfort.org.

and if you would like to read into Johnny Purnell of Purnell Racing – here is a short bio of his military experience http://operationcomfort.org/john-allen-purnell/.

Toys for Tots 5k

Hey y’all! It has been a while since I have typed up a blog post, but here I am – back and better as ever! I actually have so much to update everyone on, but this post is going to be strictly a review of the  28th Annual Toys for Tots 5k that Johnny Purnell of Purnell Racing put on last weekend.  Here we go….

So the race started at 8:30, I arrived at Bluebonnet Palace (race location) at 8:00, which was plenty of time to pick up my race bib and check-in.  Check-in was located inside of the venue, which was perfect because that Saturday was a bit chilly! I checked in with two lovely volunteers, walked back to the truck to warm up a bit, then headed to the Start Line. On my way to the Start Line, I spotted about 50 runners getting warmed up, I thought it was a pretty nice group! Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming.  Some seemed to know each other, but again – they made me feel super welcomed, like I was a cousin they hadn’t seen in a while!

IMG_7054

I was also able to talk with Mr. Johnny Purnell about the event, we shook hands, exchanged smiles and I proceeded to the Start Line. He is such a nice gentleman with a big heart! The below picture is of us post-race!

IMG_7077

Once there I met ScottyDog.  Who would’ve ever known that he, too, is also a blogger! He blogs on different races that he participates in.  He was a fun character to talk to!

IMG_7069

One volunteer sang the National Anthem – she has a gorgeous voice by the way! We honored the Colors and once she finished, we were off!

IMG_7055

Before the race, Johnny compared the route to a lollipop, and he nailed it! We ran up one stem, looped around, and came back down the same stem for a total of 5k.  The route was marked with arrows on the asphalt, which helped a ton – being I am horrible at directions, I was ecstatic to also see police and Junior Marines guiding the way.  There were two water stations as well! I didn’t take a drink, but I did see plenty of others stop to take a small drink of water. I think if I wasn’t chewing on gum, then I would’ve totally had to stop for a drink of water.  The course had a couple of nice inclines, just enough to remind your thighs that you are in fact running, but it definitely wasn’t overbearing!

IMG_7058

I completed the race in 28 minutes – I subbed 30, which is always my goal for a 5k! After I ran past the Finish Line (which doubled as the Start Line) – good ol’ Happy Santa Clause was waiting for all of the runners with a smile, bottle of water, and a banana! It was so nice to see Santa Clause – and here I thought he wasn’t real.  🙂

IMG_7063

Oh and as the runners passed the Line, our names and numbers were announced! That was pretty neat! I found my way to Marty (you’ll be seeing his name more often on this blog), and he had a huge hug waiting for me!  Don’t we all love a congratulatory hug after a race? Then as I looked at the Finish Line, I saw Mr. ScottyDog nearing his end! I congratulated him, we took a photo together, then he took one of Marty and I.

IMG_7079

It was a fun time! Again, everyone was so friendly… and ScottyDog was so cheerful! If you are wondering why I am referring to him as ScottyDog, I’ll link his blog down below – make sure you check it out! We talked to ScottyDog and another runner about different runs we were planning on participating in, then about 15 minutes later the Awards Ceremony started.

IMG_7074

I really wasn’t running for a medal, but I received 1st place in my age group! What! I was overly excited – this was the first time I had placed in a run.  Santa Clause, Mrs. Clause, Rudolph and the Young Marines were handing out the medals, that was most definitely a nice touch!

IMG_7071

The best thing about this event was the cause.  This was a run that benefited kids who are not fortunate enough to receive a gift for Christmas.  It was great to be a part of such a great run for a wonderful cause, and it was equally amazing to see other runners come together to run for the same cause! Even though it was a chilly day, the run was a heart-warming oneSo Purnell Racing, thank you for seeing the need and for doing what you do to fill it!

What is your favorite Charity Run to participate in? Are you signed up for any? If you are, leave a comment down below! And if you haven’t registered for a Charity Run – I highly recommend participating! It is extremely humbling.

As always, thanks for reading!

Sit tight, we aren’t through yet! After we complete this circuit, we take about a minute break and jump right into burpees! Typically we complete 20 burpees (either 4 sets of 5 or 2 sets of 10), BUT have y’all heard of the Spartan 30 Day Challenge? Spartan Racing is challenging everyone to complete 30 burpees a day for 30 days! You can start this challenge any day, however today is the second day of the challenge for us so we are currently Burpee-ing 30 after this circuit.  Call us crazy, call us insane, we just don’t want to remain the same!

Y’all should do the Spartan Challenge with us!

TwicetheSweat… You Know You’re Curious!

Hey y’all! Today I feel like talking about a few different topics – trust me, you’ll most definitely want to read this!

First off – where have I been this past week! Goodness, it’s like (aside from responding to y’all’s sweet comments) I fell off the face of the earth.  One word – VERTIGO.  Yes, vertigo.  Every time the weather changes (typically around January/March) my equilibrium is thrown off because of drainage (gross!) caused by allergies which is caused by weather changes, and essentially I become a hot mess.  Dizziness, nausea, and loss of depth perception is what I dealt with this entire week.  It hit me on Sunday.. and yesterday evening I was feeling a bit better, but am still taking medication just in case.  No worries, the first time I had an ‘episode’ I was 18, so I’m a five year veteran.  I know the Lord knows what He’s doing.  Sometimes I don’t understand why He allows this, but hey I’m just a good ol’ southern girl trusting in my Lord Jesus.  If y’all have any questions regarding vertigo, please ask away! I am more than willing to give any and all information if it is going to help someone.

Next topic – I have two running partners that I frequently run with and one of them is a close girl friend of mine that I have known since I was 16.  After high school, life happened (as it always does) – she left for the Army and I stayed back to date as many guys as I could, just kidding! Seriously though, I did stay back and we didn’t talk for a long time. These past three months we have been running together (alongside one of my good guy friends) and have rekindled our friendship. Thanks Running! She injured her ankle about a month ago and received doctor’s orders to rest it and buy a new pair of running shoes. This morning I was super excited because it was our first run together since her injury! She did so well, and I was ecstatic to have one of my running partners back. 🙂

Thirdly – Megan is one of my cousins.  We both love fitness. She is six months older than me, we match basically all of the time without planning any of it, yet we live in two completely different cities.  She is a country girl, I’m a city girl.  We hit the gym together about once a week and tonight she introduced me to this killer ab workout that I wanted to share with y’all.  If you are interested, let me know and I will ABSolutely (get it? ABS..abs..) post it in a separate post that way its easily accessible.

Numero Quatro – Here is the crazy exciting news…together we have created our own Fitness Instagram account.  I have been hesitant to promote it, but her and I have talked and we both think that it is the perfect time! If you have an Instagram, do me a favor and check it out! If you like what you see, follow us and you won’t be disappointed.

You can find us @twicethesweat Here we are at tonight’s gym sesh:

Five – I want to thank y’all again for your amazing support with this blog! I can not even express how neat it is. I haven’t even personally met y’all, yet I feel like I know you guys. Is that too Hallmark Card-ish? Point is, thank you for reading, commenting, and following!

Before I quit typing.. leave me a comment below if you have a blog topic request.

I would love to engage in a requested topic!

Can we stay away from politics, please? I am convinced that no President will get America back to where She needs to be.

Happy Weekend!

What’s In My OCR Gym Bag

Happy Monday, everyone 🙂 I completed a mud run/obstacle course this past Saturday with a couple of my closest guy friends.  I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to show y’all what I packed into my gym bag.  If you’re interested – keep on reading!

The mud run/obstacle course that we ran was 4 miles consisting of 35 obstacles.  Talk about a challenge, but it was a total blast! We only walked about half a mile of it.  Mind over matter! I have conquered a muddy obstacle course before, so packing my bag was quick and easy.  I hope after reading this, it’ll be the same way for you.

IMG_6552

(By the way, excuse my messy bed)

Take towels (plural)– you will be muddy, wet and gross.  Do you really want your car to take after its’ owner? Plus, some runs offer changing/shower stations and you will need to dry yourself off!

Take Wet Ones (or some type of antibacterial wipe) – After we completed the course I wiped myself down with a few wipes, then used these as a ‘soap’ in the changing/shower station they provided.  Quick, easy, cheap and gets the job done! Oh, I bought the citrus scent – I smelt SO good! Oh oh, and these also work great for getting the mud out of your ears!

Take Sanitizer – Bath and Body Works has a deal… buy 5 for $5.  I am a huge sanitizer freak.  You don’t NEED this, but it doesn’t hurt to have one on hand.

Take Duct Tape – tape your shoes to your feet, unless you’re wishing for your shoes to be swallowed up by mud pits, etc.

Take Trash Bags – After you change out of your dirty clothes/shoes, you’ll want to stash them somewhere and we DON’T want our nice, expensive gym bags smelling like mud and sewer water, nasty!

Take Deodorant – Use it before your race, smells great and prevents your underarms from chafing AND use this post race, for obvious reasons. 🙂

Take Body Glide – You MAY not need this, but my thighs definitely love me more on the runs where I use Body Glide.

Take Extra Clothes – To change into after your quick bird bath.  I suggest shorts, shirt and flip flops.  Flip flops are easier to slide on than having to put on socks and tennis shoes.  Don’t forget your clean pair of undergarments!

Take a Snack – Cliffbars are my choice bar for any race and/or workout sesh. If you are going to eat something before, eat light and drink plenty of water.

Take a Recovery Drink – for your drive home you’ll need to hydrate your body and replenish.  Nuun Tablets is what I packed – how did you know!

IMG_6435

Do Wear – tight shorts (ladies, trust me).  I find that tight (cycle like shorts) are comfy to run in and obviously cling to your body which helps a bunch when you’re jumping over, climbing over, and crawling under obstacles.

Do Wear – long socks.  These will definitely guard your calves from rope burn if you have to climb or shimmy a rope. They will also protect your legs from any scratches.  This may not be as important to everyone, but I am a fan of wearing dresses so I prefer to have minimal burns/bruises.

Do Wear – your hair up in a bun/ponytail.  This is not the time to be looking hot with luscious curly locks.  If your guy loves you, he’ll love you even more when he knows you can run an obstacle course with him without constantly worrying about your hair.

Do Wear – your natural face, maybe a bit of concealer but ladies leave the mascara, blush and eyeliner in your bag! Maybe apply it when you’re changing if you absolutely need to.  I just do away with it all.  🙂

IMG_6549

Do Wear – a good pair of running/trail shoes.  I know everyone always says not to because you’re going to muddy them all up and have to donate them. I ran in my Brooks Pure Connect, they were super muddy post race.  As soon as I got home I threw everything I wore for the race in the wash, and check these shoes out – no mud!  Wear your good shoes!

IMG_6425

Do Take Friends – People, running a muddy course or ANY race with a group is way more fun than running alone.  I definitely recommend running an obstacle course in a group because (like me) you will need help on a couple of obstacles – that’s where your TEAM comes into play.

Do Color Coordinate – with your team.  There is no better reason than.. because it’s FUN.

Do Take Money – of course.

Don’t forget to take your signed waiver, confirmation email and ID.  Better to be prepared than not!

I hope I didn’t leave anything out! If I did, please comment down below OR if you have any other suggestions, leave me a comment and let me know.  🙂

I hope this helped!

P.S. I hit 100 followers today! Y’all are awesome! Thank you SO much for following my blog! 🙂
